A Hunter’s Love

 By Jaren Hutchinson

A hunter holds in his heart paradoxical love, confusing to many, most importantly himself. The contradiction of loving something yet killing it. I love you so much I could watch you for hours. I love you enough to practice talking to you over and over again until I get it just right. I love you so much I wish you a quick death. I love you enough to put a bullet through your ribcage. To smile for the photos while the tears run down inside. To soak my hands in your blood and feast upon your flesh. To study your habits and lust after your form. I pay into funds that protect your home, and work to secure you a future, but I also aim where the heart is.

Jaren Hutchinson is from Northern Utah. He has a degree in Wildlife Ecology and Management from Utah State University, and has worked in wildlife management, research, and with conservation groups. His career path has changed, but his passion remains in both the natural world and in writing. This is his first publication.
